The King's Speech (2010)

This historical film stars Colin Firth, Derek Jacob and Robert Portal. Firth gives an Oscar winning performance of King George VI drawing on his reluctance to take the throne after his brother abdicated to be with his promiscuous lover, Wallis Simpson.
Firth plays the unexpected king struggling with the pressures of his duty and overcoming a speech impediment. His wife, Queen Elizabeth is played by beautiful Helena Bonham Carter. Carter gives a classy and refined presentation of our now, queen mother. English Director, Tom Hooper won best director, the production also won Best Picture, and Best Writing (original script).
American film bosses plan to make a more family friendly version of the film, excluding all the r-rated words. Firth however has strongly protested insisting that swear words are not used maliciously, but intended to liberate the King’s vocabulary.
The film is a tribute; it’s informative and gives us an insight into the royal lifestyle. Conversely, at times the film is slow.  A strong focus is on the King and overcoming his speech troubles. Had Hooper focused on his brother’s famous infidelity the film would have been livelier but a less accurate portrayal. However this film is worth watching, especially for Firth’s superb acting. Firth’s diversity as an actor has much improved since the days of Bridget Jones. It’s an anticipated tale expected to remain in cinema for many weeks to come.
